TECHNICAL GLOSSARY
Plain-language definitions of key terms and protocols used across the Norns platform and the wider Midgard ecosystem — so every client, regardless of technical background, can follow how the system works.
FUSION COP
Common Operating PictureA single screen that combines every signal — kinetic, RF, acoustic, EO/IR, and ISR — into one shared operational picture. Instead of checking multiple dashboards, the operator sees the whole perimeter at once, with cross-domain correlation.
DAS
Distributed Acoustic SensingA technology that turns ordinary fiber-optic cables into thousands of microphones. The cable itself detects footsteps, vehicles, and cutting attempts along the entire fence line — no separate sensors needed.
MULTI-SENSOR FUSION
Edge AI classificationCombines data from different sensor types (cameras, thermal, radar, acoustic) and uses AI to classify what is happening. Reduces false alarms because a threat must be confirmed by more than one source.
OODA LOOP
Observe–Orient–Decide–ActThe structured decision cycle every Norns operator follows. Each step — see the situation, understand it, decide, act — is recorded so the response is disciplined and reviewable.
HUMAN-GATED RESPONSE
No autonomous actionA drone or countermeasure never acts on its own. Every dispatch requires explicit human approval. The system recommends; the operator decides. This keeps response lawful and accountable.
DRONE VERIFICATION TRIGGER
Alert → UAV dispatchWhen a perimeter sensor flags a threat, Norns can automatically queue a drone to inspect — but the drone only launches after the operator confirms the dispatch.
SITE SIMULATOR
Pre-deployment modelingA virtual replica of the site where sensor placement, blind spots, and weather effects are tested before any hardware is installed. Findings from the simulation guide the real deployment.
AUDIT CHAIN
Cryptographically signed eventsEvery action — sensor reading, alert, approval, drone launch — is timestamped and digitally signed. The full sequence can be verified later and is defensible in legal or post-incident review.
HARDWARE AGNOSTIC
No vendor lock-inSensors, edge devices, and drones from any manufacturer can connect to Norns through a unified integration layer. Existing field equipment works without rip-and-replace.
AIR-GAPPED
Offline-capable deploymentThe system can run fully isolated from the public internet, on a closed network. No external cloud dependencies — the customer keeps full control of data and infrastructure.
EVIDENCE-GRADE
Court-defensible outputIntelligence outputs are tied to signed evidence objects, not free-form AI generation. Every conclusion traces back to a source, making results defensible in legal and operational review.
